But you can’t force it – affection either comes or it doesn’t. It does indeed look very pretty, as the previews suggested it would, and in both look and feel it has a distinct air of Ghibli about it. It features an interesting staff headed by talented French artist Vincent Ngheim as Art Director. It features a director of a show I dearly love ( Ikoku Meiro no Croisee), Yasuda Kenji, and comes from the always potentially interesting Satelight. It would be a lot easier if I liked Somali unreservedly.

So to say I went into this series with pretty high hopes is no misrepresentation.
While I didn’t (and don’t) really know anything about the source material, I knew the previews were good and I knew the premise sounded appealingly closer to high fantasy than anime in the 2010’s was wont to venture. And it begins with a show that was solidly in my upper mid-range of expectations, Somali to Mori no Kamisama. With such little time left, will she be able to accept this future? Anyhow, Golem hasn’t give up yet.Another season, another year – and so we begin this merry dance again. Somali remains largely in the dark about her father’s ultimate fate. However, there’s still a bit of a problem here. Before he totally breaks down, he’s asked Shizuno to look after Somali in-case they don’t complete their journey. Somali’s life is now truly in danger.Īs we come to an end here, one can clearly see that Golem is not long for this world. This information was leaked to a trusted local third party. There’s a human hiding right before her, yet she won’t be the one getting her hands dirty. A single whiff of Somali’s scent told her everything she needed to know. Unfortunately, Rosa isn’t as sweet as she appears. She’s helped Somali craft a memorable gift for Golem. She’ll be dropping off supplies, though her arrival came with much more. After the first day, Golem informs Shizuno and Somali that the innkeeper’s wife, Rosa, shall be stopping by while they’re at work. Unfortunately, she just can’t craft the perfect gift with her current skills. During this time, Somali desired to create a present for her father. While they work, Shizuno and Somali stayed put. From that moment forward, she was known as Somali.īack in the present, Golem and Yashibara started their week long job of protecting the innkeeper. Upon seeing her interest in “cats”, Golem named her after the citizen that initially found her. Still, taking a nameless child on a journey around the world just won’t do. It was at this point he decided to find a permanent home for his child. With his time drawing near, this child would certainly die without his assistance. As the days begun to fly by, Golem came to a realization. Unfortunately, he could never get any information out of her. Eventually giving in, Golem began to care for the young girl. No matter the time of day or weather condition, she kept on following.
Even after telling her to leave multiple times, the young girl followed him.
While Golem could never figure out why she did such a thing, she never left his side after that moment. Before he could say anything, this child called out to him as their own father. After being alerted of their presence by one of the citizens of the forest, Golem found a human child. Upon investigating the scene, he only found death. Already nearing the end of his days, an accident occurred within his forest. Looking back at the past, Golem recalls how he met Somali to Shizuno.
